PICTURES DON’T LIE

BY KATHERINE MACLEAN(1925- )

GALAXY SCIENCE FICTION, AUGUST

The 1950s saw the emergence of a number of notable women science fiction writers who added much to the genre, including the late Zenna Henderson, Margaret St. Clair (who debuted in the late 1940s), Andre Norton, Mildred Clingerman, and Katherine MacLean.

Although she won a Nebula Award in 1971 for the shorter version of her 1975 novel Missing Man, she has remained somewhat underrated: because her output has been unfortunately small. Several collections of her work, including The Diploids and Other Flights of Fancy (1962), Trouble With Treaties (1975), and The Trouble With You People (1980), have been issued, but a definitive “Best of” book still needs to be done. Another noteworthy novel, done in collaboration with Charles V. De Vet, is Cosmic Checkmate (1962).

“Pictures Don’t Lie” is one of the great point-of-view stories in the history of science fiction.
